Fat and glandular tissue are not the same
Chest fat is excess fatty tissue in the chest area, sometimes called pseudogynecomastia. Gynecomastia is enlargement of male breast glandular tissue. A person may have both. Appearance alone cannot reliably tell you which tissue is responsible, and a photograph, online checklist or home examination cannot establish a diagnosis. A healthcare professional can assess your symptoms, examine the area and consider whether further tests are needed.
What lifestyle changes can and cannot do
Regular activity, a balanced eating pattern and sustainable weight management can reduce total body fat for some people. Strength training can develop the chest muscles underneath the tissue. These changes may affect chest appearance, but they do not selectively burn fat from the chest and do not reliably remove glandular tissue. A lack of change is not evidence that you have failed or need to exercise harder. It may reflect the type of tissue involved.
How a clinician evaluates the difference
An assessment usually starts with a medical history, including when changes began, whether one or both sides are affected, medications, supplements and other symptoms. A physical examination helps distinguish possible causes. Blood tests or imaging may be appropriate depending on the findings, but not everyone needs the same tests. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you suspect a connection. Discuss the concern with the prescribing professional.
Changes that deserve an appointment
Arrange medical evaluation for new, unexplained, persistent or painful breast changes. A hard or distinct lump, nipple discharge, nipple retraction or skin changes should be assessed promptly. These symptoms do not establish a particular diagnosis, but they should not be managed only with a fitness program. Write down when the change started and bring your medication and supplement list to the appointment.
